The Problem with Work: Feminism, Marxism, Antiwork Politics, and Postwork Imaginaries
In The Problem with Work, Kathi Weeks boldly challenges the presupposition that work, or waged labor, is inherently a social and political good. While progressive political movements, including the Marxist and feminist movements, have fought for equal pay, better work conditions, and the recognition of unpaid work as a valued form of labor, even they have tended to accept work as a naturalized or inevitable activity. Weeks argues that in taking work as a given, we have “depoliticized” it, or removed it from the realm of political critique. Employment is now largely privatized, and work-based activism in the United States has atrophied. We have accepted waged work as the primary mechanism for income distribution, as an ethical obligation, and as a means of defining ourselves and others as social and political subjects. Taking up Marxist and feminist critiques, Weeks proposes a postwork society that would allow people to be productive and creative rather than relentlessly bound to the employment relation. Work, she contends, is a legitimate, even crucial, subject for political theory.

i want to read the fuck out of this book because it touches on a very base idea that seems extremely radical to most and i would love to read the political theory and actual research/brainstorming ideas that are surrounded by that base idea.

Reporter: I have a question to Robert and to Scarlett. Firstly to Robert, throughout Iron Man 1 and 2, Tony Stark started off as a very egotistical character but learns how to fight as a team. And so how did you approach this role, bearing in mind that kind of maturity as a human being when it comes to the Tony Stark character, and did you learn anything throughout the three movies that you made?
And to Scarlett, to get into shape for Black Widow did you have anything special to do in terms of the diet, like did you have to eat any specific food, or that sort of thing?
Scarlett: How come you get the really interesting existential question, and I get the like, “rabbit food” question?
The respect given to you if you’re a man in the entertainment business, and the respect given to you if you’re a woman in the entertainment business: all perfectly summed up in one idiotically thought out line of questioning.

To the man: So tell us more about your personal journey as a talented professional and connection with your character as you’ve both evolved in this experience! Let’s have a profound conversation about that growth, how it impacts this and future movies, and what it symbolizes in terms of the meaning of life!
To the woman: DAMN GIRL, THAT ASS THOUGH. Reveal to the women at home who don’t look like you and who are therefore inferior but should forever strive to look like you anyways: What kind of diet did you go on? The best and most significant part of your character is clearly her figure, because she’s a woman and her worth is directly related to her conventional beauty!

Photo of the day: Newly hatched Cygnets usher in start of summerA pair of recently hatched cygnets walk along the water’s edge at the Abbotsbury Swannery near Weymouth, England on May 11. The Benedictine Monks who maintained the Abbotsbury Swannery from 1000 AD up to the 1540s believed the first cygnet hatching of the spring, which usually occured between mid-May and late June, signaled the official start of summer.
